Senior Cottage Dwellings at Levant Street

Client: Wakeland Housing & Development Corp

San Diego, CA

With a significant number of low-income senior adults in the City and County of San Diego currently without the ability to obtain shelter. The goal for this project is to propose a new prototype of senior housing with quality living environments at an affordable rate to promote the health, safety and wellbeing of our senior population.

With the adaptation of “Single Occupancy Cottage Dwellings”, the project creates a village-like-setting within ample open space and landscape. The community is fully secure and served with on-site management to provide additional resident resources. The design consists of clusters of single story “cottage-like” structures that incorporate the character of the California bungalow. It provides complete independent living facilities for individuals coupled with living, sleeping, eating, cooking and sanitation. In comparison to assisted living, independent living is for individuals who can live autonomously while having general access to assistance if needed. The “Single Occupancy Cottage Dwellings” are tailored for independent living but promote a sense of community.

The project, located at 6950 Levant Street San Diego, CA 92111, is a relatively flat 4.2 Acre site. The site neighbors the Linda Vista Community Park with a community center as well as other park amenities. Access to the site is convenient as highway 163 is only a mile to the east. Hospitals, grocery stores and other neighborhood support facilities are also close-by. Continuous prevailing breezes from the west near Tecolote canyon bring coastal airflow through the park arriving at the project site, engaging natural ventilation strategies with the bungalow’s design and the community’s sustainable design factors.
